Who We Are

Based in San Francisco, North East Medical Services (NEMS) is non-profit community health center that offers comprehensive health care services to a variety of patients, a majority of whom are uninsured or low income. NEMS offers linguistically competent and culturally sensitive health care services in many languages and dialects, including English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Toishan, Vietnamese, Burmese, Korean, Spanish, and Hindi.

NEMS History

1968

NEMS was founded in San Francisco’s Chinatown. We secured federal funding to support the creation of a “neighborhood health center” in 1970 and saw our first patients in two loaned exam rooms in 1971.

1978

Established first permanent location at 1520 Stockton Street, San Francisco, which remains our largest and main clinic today.

1991

1991

Approved as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

1997

1997

NEMS formed a Management Services Organization (MSO) to provide medical and administrative services for managed care Medi-Cal and low-income patients.

2000

Opened first satellite clinic on Leland Avenue in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley. Our growth and expansion of clinics and service delivery sites continues through today, including our first clinic in San Jose in 2008 and Daly City in 2011.

Eddie Chan, PharmD, joined NEMS as President & CEO, succeeding Sophie H. Wong (1974-2003) and Linda Yu Bien (2003-2008).

Attained NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Level 3 recognition.

NEMS launched Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in the heart of Chinatown.
